Thad Langham's life has been a series of unfortunate events—from being blackmailed to being coerced into working with his father on his shady business deals. When the opportunity presents itself to turn his entire life around, he takes it.

Caleb Lockhart, the resident sniper of Unit Alpha, can't quite get Thad out of his mind. Moody, serious, and practiced at hiding his emotions, Thad is a complete work in progress. He isn't quite ready to date just yet, but that doesn't stop impulsive, brash Caleb from acting on his baser urges. One kiss is all it takes, and now they can't get each other out of their minds.

Six months later, a chance encounter leads Thad and Caleb down the road to an actual relationship. But when Thad’s past comes back to rear its ugly head, how can a brash and headstrong sniper and a damaged, slightly neurotic businessman make things work? Will their mutual attraction survive the test of time or will their relationship just remain a mercenary’s crush?

Thad has had to do things that are distasteful just to survive.  His ex-boyfriend's new friends have pulled him out of the fire but has he just landed into the frying pan?
I felt sorry for Thad.  His own father pimped him out and used him in despicable ways.  But one kiss showed him that he was worthy of so much more.  In Mercenary Crush by Frey Ortega, we got to see a man who reached rock bottom but clawed his way out.  Thad's determination to be better was a wonderful undercurrent throughout this story.  And the growing relationship between Thad and Caleb was wonderful to see.  While Caleb had fewer issues, he still dealt with the insecurities that follow new love.  His emotions were engaged and the circumstances in which he met Thad were not necessarily the best but he still took a leap of faith.  I loved that Caleb didn't hold Thad's past against him and was even willing to move heaven and earth to protect the man who has stolen his heart.
Mr. Ortega did not make the journey to happily ever after easy for either man.  They both had to learn to trust not only in each other but also themselves.  Danger surrounded them even as the fought to find a space that worked for their growing feelings.
I thoroughly enjoyed the second installment of Mr. Ortega's Unit Alpha series, and eagerly await to see the remaining members find their happily ever after.
