BookStrand Contemporary Romantic Suspense, HEA
Elizabeth Rhey is a world-class singer who has come home to Northwest London to complete the final dates of her last tour. Then her wayward brother gets in trouble with the police again, and she is about ready to wash her hands of him. Only he’s dead. She finds herself caught up in a police investigation, where her past secrets catch up with her.
Gareth Buchanan is Beth’s bodyguard. It wasn’t his chosen career, just one he landed on after taking a break from the police force. When Beth’s brother is killed and the investigation around his death unravels, he finds himself getting very close to Beth. With a desperate need to protect her, Gareth is forced to confront his own ghost.
Both their lives are turned upside down as they find out who is behind her brother’s death. Can they face their past to find peace for their future?
Beth is on her final tour only to have that marred by the death of her brother. He has always been in trouble but she never expected this result. And with his death her past and the secrets buried there may come to light. In Behind the Makeup by Jessica Stevens, we find how little is shown on the surface. Gareth has protected Beth for the past two years but he is finding just how little he really knows about the woman he guards. He does know when her world crumbles he can only give her the support that will ultimately lead to pain he is sure. Ms. Stevens gave us a story where two characters found that love and support was closer than they suspected. Gareth struggles to keep his heart disengaged even while he must protect Beth from danger that is closer than either of them expected. And Beth has used her past and her fame as a shield to protect her heart. With her brother’s death she is forced to look deep and make changes. Is Gareth a part of her future or collateral damage? I enjoyed finding out. Ms. Stevens wrote a story full of twists and turns even as Gareth and Beth learned who they could trust. The story was enjoyable and I will be picking up more from this author in the future.
