How can you be twenty-five and not know you’re gay? Billy Ballew runs from that question. A high school dropout, barely able to read until he taught himself, Billy’s life is driven by his need to help support his parents as a construction worker, put his sisters through college, coach his Little League team, and not think about being a three-time loser in the engagement department. Being terrified of taking tests keeps Billy from getting the contractor's license he so desires, and fear of his mother's judgement blinds Billy to what could make him truly happy.

Then, in preparation for his sister’s big wedding, Billy meets Shaz—Chase Phillips—a rising star, celebrity stylist who defines the word gay. To Shaz, Billy embodies everything he’s ever wanted—stalwart, honest, brave—but even if Billy turns out to be gay, he could never endure the censure he’d get for being with a queen like Shaz. How can two men with so little in common find a way to be together? Can the Stylist of the Year end up with the Knight of Ocean Avenue?

Review
I adore Tara Lain’s style of writing. So when I saw Knight of Ocean Avenue I just had to review it. In this book I felt a roller coaster of emotions.  I fell completely in love with Billy, and I remembered an experience sort of like what he had that proves teachers really do influence long after we leave their classrooms.
Billy is in the construction business. He is really good at his job. He could be a contractor and work for himself but he feels like he is stupid.  When he saves a man he doesn’t even know from being beat up he has no idea that man will change his entire life.
I liked how Billy is extremely kind hearted.  He would never just sit by and let someone be hurt.  He also is very brave. He takes a lot of risks in this book. Emotional risks he is really brave if you ask me. He keeps getting dumped by girls for lack of passion.  They all think he is great just no spark between them.
Shaz is anything but subtle. Bright red hair, and even brighter personality. Openly gay and proud of who he is. When he is hired to be the stylist for Billy’s sister’s wedding the chemistry between him and Billy is almost instantaneous. Billy though has never considered being gay.
But for Shaz Billy is willing to try.  There is a sweet nature to this story I couldn’t stop smiling as I read it.  I really think this story is for a true romantic who loves MM.  Both men teach the other a little bit about love and what it means to be a partner to someone.  Shaz really helps Billy grow as a person, and I think Billy does that for Shaz too.  Loved this story!!  It is one for the keeper shelves.
