Losing her partner was tough for Lilly Webb, moving to a new job in a new city even tougher, and then she meets her partners. Two men who will push her to the very limits and demand even more as they get to know one another. But she has a huge problem, she’s being used by someone or something and she has no idea why.
Artaxias never thought the day would come when he’d finally find his mate. That she’s his new partner makes it all the sweeter. Rounding out their threesome is Gavriel, once a kid he had to protect, he grew into a man that Ax fully respects and is proud to call family.
When both men realize the extent of Lilly’s troubles, they will stop at nothing to protect her. But it’s looking like it may just not be enough. With no idea who they are fighting, their relationship will be pushed to new limits. But is love enough?
Lilly’s Torment by Honor James is second in the Beyond the Veil series. While this story can be read as a standalone you will better enjoy the subtleties having read the prior story.
I am really enjoying this world that Ms. James is building even if humans aren’t portrayed in their best light (but harshly honest). Lilly is super smart and protective. But someone is using her brain against her. I love that she has barely set foot into her new place of work before she is snapped up by her mates. And they quickly realize that something isn’t right and begin to move heaven and earth to protect Lilly from an unseen enemy. Ms. James allowed Lilly’s inner core to shine in this tale. I could totally understand just how off putting it was to find out that someone had used you and continues to use you and not only do you not know why but don’t know how. The fortitude to just keep living day by day was hard but Lilly and her men did so and did so with grace and courage.
Speaking of Lilly’s men, I adored Artaxias and Gavriel. They had a history and I loved how well Ms. James played off they past with their future. They interacted in ways people do when they have a long history and Ms. James articulated theirs well and with humor. Both men were strong in different ways and brought different things to their relationship with Lilly even as they continue to respect each other. With the difference in age and the fact that Artaxias once protected Gavriel, Ms. James handled their relationship transition well and it felt believable.
I continue to enjoy this series and am looking forward to what Ms. James has in store for us next.
