Layne Macadam thankful blog

What I am thankful for.

If I wrote a list on the many things I am thankful for, you would still be reading this tomorrow, so I decided to focus on education and tell you a story that touched my heart.

At my university graduation ceremony, renowned author, Bryce Courtenay, received his Honorary Doctor of Letters. Born illegitimately in South Africa, and placed in an orphanage at the age of five, Bryce told the story of how one day he split his thumb while chopping wood, a task forbidden at his age. The matron, beat him for disobedience, wrapped his thumb, and then sent him on a seven-mile walk to the doctor.

While waiting to be seen, Bryce passed out under a tree. He was found and treated hours later, but was by then too tired to walk home so took refuge under the house where he found a box of books. He became so enraptured by a leather bound one with gold writing that he snaffled it. He kept it hidden until one day Miss Bornstein, a temporary teacher, came to the orphanage and earned his trust. She taught him to read, and sent him books every so often and set him little exams. When he was eleven she encouraged him to apply, and sit for, a scholarship, which he won.

Bryce attributes Miss Bornstein kindness and devotion with changing his life. In his speech, he spoke about the responsibility of the educated to teach the uneducated. He was fifty when he wrote his first novel, The Power of One.

I am thankful for all the Miss Bornsteins in the world, and for having the good fortune to be born in a country where education is compulsory and not a privilege.

Desire Unleashed - Blurb

When schoolteacher Kathy Bellamy, moved from Louisiana to Coronado, she didn’t expect her secret dream or her worst nightmare to become a reality.
Kathy longs for the fairytale. An old-fashioned girl saving herself for the right guy, but after only one date with Navy SEAL trainer Shane Jackson, she trashes her values and willingly tumbles into the sack without a thought for the consequences.
Confirmed bachelor and relationship cynic, Jackson has no room in his life for a permanent woman. Temporary liaisons are all he is up for. Cocky and self-assured, he believes he can pick a likeminded player at one glance. So when he discovers that Kathy, is the complete antithesis of what he believed, he is thrown into a tailspin. But before long and way out of his comfort zone, he finds himself knee deep in a relationship that he can’t quite seem to end.
Kathy’s love life is evolving parallel with her nightmare. The object of a maniac, when she throws caution to the wind with Shane on the beach one day and acts out of character, her actions are seen by her stalker as a betrayal that demands retribution in blood. Abducted and taken to a secret location at knifepoint, can Shane, who himself is the ultimate predator find and rescue her, before it is too late?
