Willie Krenshaw wanted nothing more than a few minutes watching the waters of Lake Erie after a long workday. What she ended up with was a drugged male vampire and an itch to be a Good Samaritan.
When her inner kitty starts sniffing around at the male she's helping, she knows Fate's evil sense of humor is in full swing. Being a shifter-vampire hybrid is hard enough, but having a male vampire as her fated mate is just too much.
Nickola, the vampire she assists, finds her breathtaking and does all he can to push Fate's agenda.
Stephen is the male vampire Nickola is investigating for the Council. He takes aim at the couple, intent on pulling Nick to his side or killing him. Between Stephen's scheming and the Council's interest in Willie, can they survive the chaos long enough to test the depths of their passions?

Review
Half in Love by Lea Barrymire is first in the Willie Krenshaw series.  This is my first time reading this author and I can honestly say it will not be the last.  Ms. Barrymire gave a story that was well written.  She gave us two characters with depth and a story that depended upon more thanjust sex.
I liked that Ms. Barrymire gave us a strong female character in Willie.  Willie trusts no one, mainly because she is hated by vampire and shifter alike.  She fights only when they leave her no choice.  She is smart enough to know stealth and common sense will win most fights.  But just because she tries to remain hidden doesn’t mean she isn’t kick-ass.  I appreciated the strong fa├žade she presented to the world but loved seeing that her heart was a soft mushy center.  She didn’t have time for romance but when she meets Nickolai her body betrays her, at least in her mind.   Much of this story is Willie’s struggle between what feels right (heart) and what is smart (mind).  Ms. Barrymire allowed us to see Willie’s struggle toward acceptance while keeping us guessing as to which would win…heart or mind.
However I adored Nickola.  He exuded calm, comfort and strength even while injured.  His old world charm and comfort within his skin was sexy as all get out.  And while I understood Willie’s hesitancy I kept asking what more could he do?  He understood Willie’s fears and was willing to wait for her to trust him.   He respected her and was willing to fight for her.  When was Willie going to let him in?When was she going to afford him the same respect?
Overall I enjoyed this story.  Ms. Barrymire allowed me to join Willie on her journey as she learned to trust both her animal and Nickolai.  I watched Nickola’s seemingly endless patience lead him toward a goal that would give him a mate that saw and wanted him.  I saw two characters that moved past simply surviving to a committed and loving relationship in spite of their differences not because of them.
